The exhibition depicts the quest of man seeking knowledge of his body, by means of books, prints, preparation and models from the medical collections of the UvA. Some of the collections dated back to the late middle ages. These collections, attracts researchers from all over the world and was shown at the Allard Pierson Museum, Amsterdam.

Personal Space Technologies, demonstrated the next-generation way of examining human body, through a autostereoscopic 3D screen (3D without glasses) visitors can visually “hold” a pumping heart in your hand, and slice it open as in real anatomy experience. The contents are extracted from MRI scan of a human brain, ultrasound images of a patient with heart disease, and CT scan of a baby in the womb, then reconstructed into 3D or 4D(3D+time).

Our technology was shown at the Uva ErfgoedLab, the heritage Lab of the UvA which situated between the Allard Pierson Museum and the Special Collections.

 History
For decades the authorities of New Zealand has sought the returns of Maori’s remains, which were collected by Westerners in a grilly exchange for weapons and other goods.

The museum of Rouen Maori
The museum of Rouen displayed a tattooed Maori head since 1875. Before the reopening of the museum in 2010, after it was closed for more than 10 years, officials of the museum who took stock during the closing period, decided that the head should return for a decent funeral.

Politics
The French government tried not to make a precedent of this return. The solution was created by not seeing the head as art but as a body part. From then on reparations for the returning could start.

 Buried but not gone
Returning the head means that no one will ever see it again. To still let the people know about the tradition of the Maori and their tattoos, the head was scanned and Museum Solutions was asked to make it possible to show the virtual head, using our Digital Heritage Presenter.

Satisfying all parties
After uploading the data, visitors are still able to explore the beauty of the ancient Maori whilst at the same time the Maori traditions were respected. The official return was celebrated in the French Senate, attended by the chairman of the French parliament, the ambassador of New Zealand and representatives of the Maori.

Museum Solutions was asked to brighten this event with the 3D presentation of the Maori.

The future
Whether art is stored in depot or in a different place, it is still possible to show it everywhere around the world. Without costly transport costs and the risk of damage!

The Digital Heritage presenter is the solutions to show an entire collection and let people interact with it in a way they have never seen before.

 The Museum

museumgoudA is preserving and presenting the cultural heritage and the Gouda city history since 1874.

The project

The museumgoudA started in 2008 a project to digitize their collection. They had two mean reasons to do so; first for preservation of the collection, which is vulnerable and/or too valuable to show permanently. Secondly to reveal their entire collection to their visitors and give them a unique experience by giving the precious artifacts into the visitors hands.

Steps to follow

Together with the museum, Museum Solutions wrote a plan for the funding of this entire project. After approval the actual work commenced.

 Selecting and scanning

The first objects were selected and 3D laser scans were made on-site. The post-production of the collected images were made and the collected

3D data was uploaded into the museum’s database.

The presentation

For their visitors, museumgoudA created a virtual room. The room is concentrated around the Museum Solutions Digital Heritage Presenter, which gives the collected 3D data into the hands of the visitor as if they are holding the a
ctual artifact itself.

At the same time a Personal Space Station, a mobile version of the DHP, is used to bring the entire collection to the classroom or external exhibitions.

The future

In general a new way of attracting audience has to be sought by museums around the world. Digitizing the collection opens new ways in doing so. Why use the collected information for preservation only? The Digital Heritage Presenter makes it

possible to enhance visitors experience in an intuitive way.

Bring the collection to your audience, save costs with the mobile version and tell the story you want, without the risk of damaging the precious artifacts.
