Technology

The exponential growth of 3D and 4D information drives the need for fast and efficient analysis tools. However traditional interfaces, like 2D screens, keyboard and mouse are problematic and have severe limitations for this kind of analysis.
Our system brings a new solution. Our technology simplifies working with 3D and 4D (3D + time) data and will allow you to interact with your data in ways only imagined. Furthermore our tools allow you to focus on your task at hand while we take care of the technology. It just works.
3D Virtual Reality Workstation ExplainedBoth workstations are complete desktop virtual reality systems for easy and intuitive analysis of 3D and 4D (3D + time) data. The user looks at the screen via a mirror. This enables the user to bring his hands into the same environment as the virtual 3D-objects without interrupting the visual image. The user is invited to grab, hold and interact with the data. To facilitate interaction highly accurate wireless optical tracking is used. Interaction controllers are used to position an object in 3D with six degrees of freedom. |

Each workstation is equipped with a sub mm accurate and fast six degrees of freedom optical tracking system. The system is based on infrared lighting, reducing interference of visible light sources from the environment. This allows our system to be used under normal office working conditions, without requiring controlled lighting. Objects can be tracked by applying retro-reflective markers. Some advantages:

Unleashing the 3rd Dimension
![]() |
The world we live in is 3-dimensional. Yet, when data is analysed with a computer, data is generally presented in a 2-dimensional fashion. For instance, a physician that investigates a 3D scan of an organ looks at 2D cross sections of the scan, and has to use his spatial knowledge and understanding to mentally construct the complete 3D structure from these cross sections. Similarly, a CAD/CAM model is often designed and reviewed in 2D, relying on the designer’s ability to translate this information to 3D. This ability requires years of training and is of utmost importance to make the right decisions. The 3D visualization and data reviewing solutions of PS-tech circumvent this problem by presenting information directly in 3D. Our products use advanced stereoscopic displays that enable full and comfortable 3D viewing of 3D data. Combined with powerful 3D applications that are designed specifically for different markets, these systems remove the long training period necessary to gain the skills required to correctly interpret 3D data using 2D images.
Moreover, the risks of such subjective interpretation are removed by presenting the data directly in 3D.By working closely with our technology partners, PS-Tech offers a range of high resolution, flickering free, multi-user capable displays in our products, creating a truly immersive and believable 3D environment on your desktop or in a conference room. |
User-Centric Technology

PS-tech’s visualization solutions are designed in a user-centric approach. Rather than trying to adapt a user to the quirks of the technology with complicated manuals and trainings, the technology is being used to solve the user’s problems and help him to perform his tasks more effectively. This is illustrated in our user interface technology.PS-tech’s proprietary optical tracking technology is used to present the user with an intuitive interface to the presented 3D data. By using simple wireless devices, the user is able to hold 3D objects in his hands and perform complex 3D manipulations, such as cropping the data in any direction, drawing and erasing and performing 3D measurements.
Whenever a user picks up a 3D object, it is as if he is looking at a real physical object in his hands. A standard keyboard and mouse are used to solve tasks that are more effectively performed in 2D. |
Visualization Systems

Our solutions have a large flexibility in their set up, ranging from single-user desktop environments to multi-user systems for larger environments. For instance, the PSS and C-Station are desktop 3D workstations specifically arranged for working with 3D data for prolonged periods. These systems present a user with a 3D environment in which he can directly interact with the data in a co-located fashion, meaning that the 3D data is perceived at exactly the same location as where he is manipulating the data. In this case, all human senses are in agreement: proprioception, a person’s sense of the position and orientation of his body and limbs, and visual stimuli. The principle of the PSS and C-Station is illustrated on the left/right. A user sits behind the system and looks at a 3D display via a mirror. In effect, the user perceives the display as being located behind the mirror, just above the table.
By using 3D glasses and a stereoscopic 3D display, the user perceives a 3D virtual world located in the workspace underneath the mirror. The user can reach under the mirror, into the workspace, without obscuring his own projection or bumping into to screen. The workspace is observed by an optical tracking system, enabling intuitive 3D interaction within the virtual environment. |
Visualizing Data
![]() |
Data can be divided into two categories: surface models and volumetric data.Surface models are generally encountered in the design industry, where objects are described by their surfaces, for instance using polygons or parametric surfaces. In many fields, such as the oil&gas and the medical markets, data is volumetric, meaning that the inside of the data is also modeled using a discretely sampled 3D set. Typically, volumetric data is described by a group of 2D image slices, stacked together to form a volume. These slices are often acquired by scanners, such as CT, MRI or Ultrasound, at regular intervals. In contrast to most existing rendering software, PS-tech developed advanced volumetric rendering technology that preserves full quality of the visualization during 3D interaction. |
